Ceramic cookware is a safe non-stick alternative to traditional cookware with a non-reactive coat that doesnt leach chemicals into food (causing cancer), is non-stick and cooks food evenly. Believe it or not, the ceramic coat was designed to be cleaned easily. But you cant just throw them in the dishwasher like other cooking sets!
So what is the best recipe for success? Believe it or not vinegar and baking soda is the winning combination! Both of these products are better known for being used in cooking and baking, but we forget that with all of their many uses, they can actually CLEAN!!!!
How to Clean Ceramic Cookware With Vinegar and Baking Soda
If your pots and pans are only slightly dirty you can get away with hand washing them as you normally would or adding some water and letting them soak a bit, but what about if there's some serious food crusted onto the surfaces? Then follow these directions.
What You Will Need
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Wooden utensil
- Non-abrasive scrubbing pad
Simmer
Fill pan with enough water to cover the surfaces that have food stains and raise temperature to medium heat, bringing to a simmer.
Add baking soda
Sprinkle in some baking soda.
Scrape
Scrape the caked-on food from the pan with a wooden spoon (note: do not use abrasive utensils as it can ruin the pan's coating).
Dump and scrape
Dump out the water and baking soda from the pan and let cool down for a few minutes.
Add vinegar and baking soda
Fill pan with some vinegar, enough to cover the surfaces that have food stains, and sprinkle in a good amount of baking soda. If the pan is really dirty also sprinkle in some coarse salt. Wait for the vinegar and baking soda to fizz up and work their magic before you work your magic.
Scrub
Use a scrubbing pad to scrub away at the stains until they're gone!
General Ceramic Cookware Maintenance
- Remember to clean both the inside and outside of the pans after each use. Doing so prevents a build-up of grease and discoloration of the pans.
- Only use a sponge, cloth or non-abrasive pad for washing. Do not use nylon scrubbing pads, steel wool or any kind of abrasive cleaning products as it can ruin your pots and pans.
- Make sure to remember to rinse and dry the cookware before storing.
- Do not place your pots and pans in the dishwasher unless the set specifically says they are dishwasher safe. Even then it's a good idea to handwash your cookware since it will last longer.
- Clean your set with vinegar and baking soda on a regular basis. Over long-term use, cleaning regularly maintains the longevity of your cookware.
- Be sure to season your set before use! Especially a brand new set. A well-seasoned set enhances the performance of the ceramic.
Simple Seasoning Tips
Before you start using your ceramic pots and pans make sure to season them first.
Do this by lightly rubbing cooking oil onto the cooking surface then heating the cookware over medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes before removing them from the heat. Once the cookware has cooled, handwash in warm, soapy water and rinse. Now your cookware is ready for use!
Seasoning your set helps remove any chemicals from packing/shipping, and assists the releasing of non-metallic film layers used on hard materials to make them healthy and resistant to scratching.
Note that over time, the characteristics of the ceramic coating may fade, but you may revitalize the performance of the ceramic coating by simply re-seasoning your cookware.
