Air frying is a fantastic way to cook. It yields crispy, delicious food that tastes as if it came right out of a deep fryer without all of the grease and all of the guilt of traditionally fried food. While air fryers don't create nearly the mess that traditional deep fat fryers do, they can get dirty if you don't clean them properly on a regular basis.

It's important to keep your air fryer clean so that food debris and grease don't build up and get caught, transferring off-flavours and bad smells to other foods while reducing the machine's performance and longevity.

When cleaning air fryers, be sure to avoid using steel wool, metal scrubbers or any other abrasive sponge as they can scratch and damage the non-stick coating on the air fryer.

The easiest way to maintain a clean air fryer is simply to clean it after every use. That way, you won't have stubborn, stuck-on bits of food that build up over time.

If your routine is to wake up every morning and make yourself air fryer eggs then just add cleaning the air fryer into your daily routine in just the same way.

Equipment

  • Soft cloth
  • Non-abrasive sponge
  • Towel

Materials

  • Dish soap

Instructions

  • Unplug the air fryer and let it cool:Make sure the air fryer is off, unplugged and cool before beginning to clean it. These all sound obvious but taking a second to be sure that its ready will help you avoid hurting yourself or damaging the device.
  • Clean the basket and pans:In many air fryers, the removable baskets and pans are dishwasher safe. If this is the case, simply put the basket and pans into the dishwasher and let the dishwasher clean them for you. If not, you can simply soak the basket and pans in hot, soapy water for 10-15 minutes then gently scrub any food particles off with a non-abrasive sponge or towel. Finally, give the basket and pans a quick rinse and dry with a towel before putting them back in the air fryer. Check the manufacturer's instructions to see if the removable parts are dishwasher safe.
  • Clean the heating element:To clean the heating element, turn the air fryer upside down and wipe it down with a towel or non-abrasive sponge.
  • Clean the inside of the air fryer:Use a soft cloth or paper towels to wipe out any visible grease or food debris from the inside of the air fryer. Next, use a soft cloth, a non-abrasive sponge or a soft-bristled brush soaked in hot water with dish soap to gently scrub the bottom and sides of the inside of the air fryer.
  • Wipe down the outside of the air fryer:Grease does not just build up on the inside of the air fryer, it can also accumulate on the outside. After every use, wipe the outside of the air fryer down with a soft towel soaked in hot, soapy dishwater.

Notes

If the food or grease in the air fryer is particularly stubborn and caked on, you can make a paste of warm water and baking soda to spread over the baked-on grease. Let the paste sit for 2-3 minutes before gently scrubbing it off.
