Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Sandwich from Sweet Freedom

by

Sweet Freedom is proof that you don’t need to give up taste to manage dietary restrictions and preferences. Send any omnivore through the door of the single stand-alone row home next to South Street’s Jamaican Jerk Hut and they won’t leave feeling cheated out of their white flour or egg wash.

Among the vegan, gluten-free, and allergy-friendly goodies is Sweet Freedom’s version of those cloyingly sweet Little Debbie Oatmeal Cream Pies we knew and loved as children. But besides two soft oatmeal cookies with something sweet and creamy inside, these two have little in common. The local version boasts garbanzo bean flour as its first ingredient. The Little Debbie counterpart’s first ingredient: corn syrup. And while the national brand’s sugar-high inducing marshmallowy inside features partially hydrogenated soybean oil, Sweet Freedom’s vanilla icing is sweetened with coconut milk and agave nectar. Your body prefers the vegan version, and your taste buds won’t know the difference.
